The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is the UK’s independent regulator for data protection and information rights law. The public body reports directly to the government and serves to protect the interests of the public. Whether the ICO is investigating a cyber-attack on a national company or a breach in confidential data, the ICO will act on behalf of the UK public.

The ICO have specific responsibilities set out in the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA2018), the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) and more.

Additionally, part of their role is to take action to ensure organisations meet their information rights obligations. ICO can take action to change the behaviour of organisations and individuals that collect, use and keep personal information. This includes criminal prosecution, non-criminal enforcement and audit.
